Dev Deepawali in Varanasi 2026 is on Tuesday, 24 November 2026, the evening of Kartik Purnima, the full moon of the month of Kartik. On this night the ghats along the Ganga are lined with lamps and the city draws very large crowds. This guide covers where and how to watch (ghats or a boat), how to approach boat booking, how to get around, how to plan for crowds and safety, and how to enquire about taxi or group transport with us. No official 2026 traffic, parking or boat-access order had been published when we checked, so treat operational details as provisional until the authorities announce them.

Verified 18 October 2026. “Not yet announced” means we found no official 2026 notice; it does not mean there will be no restrictions.

When Is Dev Deepawali in Varanasi in 2026?

Dev Deepawali 2026 is on Tuesday, 24 November 2026. Panchang sites such as Drik Panchang and the festival committee’s own page, devdeepawali.org, give the same date, and the Purnima tithi covers the whole evening, which is what fixes the festival.

The date and the timings are different things. The festival date comes from the lunar calendar; the timing of lamp-lighting, the Ganga Aarti, shows and boat boarding is set locally and is usually announced close to the day. The evening Pradosh period is commonly cited as roughly 5:08 pm to 7:47 pm, but treat that as a ritual window, not a programme schedule. Re-check announcements in the week before you travel.

Diwali 2026 is on 8 November, so Dev Deepawali comes a little over two weeks later. Many visitors combine it with Ganga Mahotsav, which was proposed for 20–23 November, or with Chhath Puja (13–16 November) if they are already in the region.

What Is Dev Deepawali and Why Is It Celebrated in Varanasi?

Dev Deepawali means “the Diwali of the gods”. It is observed on Kartik Purnima, the full-moon night that ends the month of Kartik, and is also called Tripurari Purnima. According to tradition, it marks Lord Shiva’s victory over the demon Tripurasura, and it is believed that the gods come down to bathe in the Ganga on this night. Kartik Purnima is widely described as one of the most auspicious days for a Ganga bath at Varanasi (Kartika Purnima, Wikipedia; Dev Deepavali (Varanasi)).

In Varanasi the festival is closely tied to the river and the ghats. Devotees take the Kartik dawn bath, offer lamps (deepdaan) to the Ganga, and the ghats are lit with lamps in the evening. It differs from Diwali, which is kept on the new-moon night with Lakshmi Puja at home; Dev Deepawali is a river-centred full-moon observance with its own traditions in Kashi. For many people it is first a religious occasion, and the lamps and crowds are part of that, not the whole of it.

What Can Visitors Experience During Dev Deepawali?

Customary features (seen in recent years): the ghats lit with lamps, the Ganga Aarti, devotees floating or offering lamps, and the river busy with boats. Official figures for recent years describe very large lamp counts: about 11 lakh lamps on 84 ghats in 2024 according to All India Radio, and about 25 lakh across the ghats in 2025 per news reports.

Reported for 2026 (not final): local press reported on 18 August 2026 that the divisional commissioner reviewed preparations for Ganga Mahotsav (proposed for 20–23 November, mainly at Raj Ghat, with events at Namo Ghat) and Dev Deepawali on 24 November, with security, traffic, parking, lighting, medical and fire arrangements on the agenda (Live Aaryaavart, 18 Aug 2026, in Hindi). Other reports mention a lamp count of over 11 lakh and a 3D laser show; we have not seen an official programme confirming either, so we are not listing show timings.

How to read this: lamps, Ganga Aarti and heavy crowds are the reliable parts of the night. Shows, fireworks, show locations and timings change every year; check the official announcement closer to the date.

Best Ways to See Dev Deepawali in Varanasi

General comparison based on how past festival nights have worked. Individual 2026 arrangements are not yet announced.
Option What it is like Limits Best for
Public ghats on foot Closest to the rituals and lamp-lighting; free to join Very dense crowds near main ghats; long walks if vehicles are stopped; steps and uneven surfaces Pilgrims, fit adults, photographers who can wait
Boat on the river A wider view of many ghats at once, away from the crowd on land Needs advance booking; boarding point and route depend on permissions; can be cancelled or restricted on the day; cold on the water Families, groups, those wanting a seat
Designated or organised viewing area Only if officially announced for 2026 Not confirmed Check official channels
Walk plus vehicle Arrive by road to the nearest permitted point, then walk the last stretch Access point depends on the traffic order Groups with elders or luggage

No viewing option is guaranteed to be quiet, accessible or permitted on the day. If anyone promises a guaranteed spot or a guaranteed boarding point, ask for it in writing.

Which Ghats Should You Consider for Dev Deepawali Viewing?

Varanasi has 84 ghats. The ones below are the ones visitors most often ask about. We have not verified 2026 access, so confirm each on the day with the authorities or your operator.

Dashashwamedh Ghat

The best-known Ganga Aarti ghat and usually the busiest. Past traffic plans have stopped vehicles around Godowlia and Maidagin, so the last stretch is on foot. Expect heavy crowding; not ideal for people who struggle with crowds or walking.

Assi Ghat

The southern end of the ghat line, with its own evening aarti. Past years’ restrictions have also covered the road stretch from Maidagin towards Assi. Reaching it may need a longer walk or a drop point on the approach roads.

Raj Ghat and Namo Ghat

At the northern side of the ghat line. Namo Ghat was inaugurated in November 2024 (All India Radio), and the 2026 Ganga Mahotsav main programme is reported to be planned at Raj Ghat. Whether this stretch is easier to reach on the night depends on the traffic order.

Chet Singh Ghat

Mentioned in past years as a venue for a laser or light show. Do not plan around a 2026 show here until it is officially announced.

Panchganga Ghat

A traditional ghat with its own role in the festival’s history. Check access and any programme before you plan to be there.

Manikarnika is an active cremation ghat. If you pass it by boat or on foot, please be respectful and avoid photographing the cremation area.

Dev Deepawali Boat Booking in Varanasi

Boats are popular because they let you see many ghats at once. They also sell out and attract inflated or misleading offers, so a careful booking process matters more than the boat’s name.

  1. Decide shared or private. Shared boats sell seats; private boats are booked as a whole vessel for your group.
  2. Ask about boat type and permitted capacity, and confirm the boat is registered and licensed to operate on the day.
  3. Get the boarding point and reporting time in writing, and ask what happens if the point is closed on the night.
  4. Ask exactly what the price includes: duration, route, life jackets, taxes, any fees to board.
  5. Check safety: life jackets for every passenger, passenger count within capacity, a sober and experienced boatman.
  6. Read payment, cancellation, delay and refund terms before paying.
  7. Save the confirmation, the operator’s contact number and the boat or operator name.
  8. Reconfirm the plan 24–48 hours before, because access rules can change.
Prices are intentionally not shown: operators publish very different figures for the same night, and we do not have a verified 2026 price to quote.
Boat option Suitable for Questions to ask Price status
Shared boat (seat basis) Couples, small groups on a budget How many seats are sold? Is seating allocated? Is the price per person? Get a written quote
Private boat (whole vessel) Families with children or elders, larger groups Maximum passengers? Duration? Can the boarding time be fixed? Get a written quote
Larger or cruise-style boat Big groups that want more deck space Is it permitted on the route? Washroom or AC? Where does it wait? Get a written quote

Past reports described a barricaded stretch of the river and restrictions on certain boats on the night (for example hand-rowed boats) in some years, and in 2021 boats from outside Varanasi were barred. We have not seen an official 2026 boat order, so ask your operator how the current rules affect your boat and boarding point.

About Sachin Travels and boats: [SACHIN TO CONFIRM and keep ONE line, delete the others: (A) “We arrange boat enquiries through local boat operators; the boat service itself is provided and priced by the operator.” (B) “We do not arrange boats; we provide transport to the boarding point.” (C) “We operate our own boats; details below.”] You should always confirm the operator’s terms before paying anyone.

How Much Does a Dev Deepawali Boat Ride Cost?

There is no single price, and we won’t quote one we can’t verify. Advertised prices for the same night vary many-fold between operators, and some quote per seat while others quote per boat, so compare like with like. What drives the quote:

  • Shared or private use.
  • Boat type and verified passenger capacity.
  • Ride duration and reporting time.
  • Boarding point and route.
  • Inclusions (life jackets, taxes, guide) and any extra fees.
  • Demand and how close to the date you book.
  • The operator’s cancellation and refund terms.

Ask for an itemised written quote with the boat type, capacity, duration, boarding point, what is included and what is not. If a price looks unusually low, ask what is left out. WhatsApp us your date and group size to ask what we can arrange.

How to Reach Dev Deepawali in Varanasi

By air: Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport (VNS), about 26 km from the city centre. By train: Varanasi Junction, Cantt and nearby stations. By road: highways from Prayagraj, Lucknow, Ayodhya, Gorakhpur and Bihar. See our Varanasi airport taxi page for airport transfers.

The last stretch to the ghats is the part to plan carefully. In past years the city has closed roads near the main ghats to vehicles, for example no vehicles between Maidagin and Godowlia in 2023 (India TV, Nov 2023), with vehicles stopped at designated points and visitors walking in. Local reports for 2024 described similar restrictions from the afternoon. The authorities also declared the city a no-fly zone for drones and similar objects around the festival in 2024 (Republic World).

2026 status: no official traffic order had been published when we checked on 18 October 2026. Don’t assume a vehicle can reach the riverfront, and don’t assume any particular road will be open or closed. Check the Varanasi Police Commissionerate and district administration notices, and ask your driver or operator for the confirmed meeting point.

Taxi Booking and Local Transport During Dev Deepawali

If you plan to use a vehicle, pre-arrange it. Things worth settling in advance:

  • Pickup and drop-off: the exact point and a contact number, not a ghat name alone.
  • Which parts can be done by vehicle: confirm the last point a car or van can reach on the day.
  • Time buffers: allow extra time for traffic and walking, and don’t schedule tight connections.
  • Waiting and parking: agree waiting time, parking arrangements and any extra charges.
  • A backup plan: a second meeting point if the first is closed.
  • Vehicle size: match it to your group and luggage.

Sachin Travels provides local taxis, airport and station pickups and group vehicles. Start with our taxi service in Varanasi page, see cab rental in Varanasi for cars, or browse the full vehicle list. For the old-city lanes and the pedestrian zones around the ghats, see our Varanasi ghat guide.

Is an Urbania or Tempo Traveller Suitable for a Group Visit?

For a family or group travelling together, one larger vehicle from the airport, station or hotel is simpler than several cars: you arrive together, share one driver contact and avoid splitting up. It helps most for the arrival and departure legs and for trips such as Ayodhya or Prayagraj around the festival.

It does not change the rules on the night. A larger vehicle cannot enter restricted roads, so groups should plan for a drop point and a walk. Before booking, confirm:

  • The seat count and luggage space of the exact vehicle (see its page for details).
  • The pickup point and whether the vehicle can reach it.
  • Whether the quote includes waiting, parking, tolls and other charges.
  • Availability for your date, confirmed in writing.

Crowd Management and Safety Tips for Dev Deepawali 2026

  • Check official traffic and access notices before you leave, and again on the day.
  • Leave extra time for travel and walking. Plan to arrive earlier than you think you need to.
  • Keep children and older relatives close, and agree a meeting point in advance.
  • Make a plan for anyone who gets separated: a fixed meeting spot and a phone number written down.
  • Keep phones charged. Mobile networks can be slow in dense crowds, so don’t rely on live location alone.
  • Follow instructions from police, event staff and ghat personnel.
  • Avoid pushing into dense crowds, climbing on railings or standing at unsafe edges of ghat steps.
  • On a boat: wear the life jacket you are given, stay seated when told, and don’t board an overcrowded boat or one you can’t identify as a registered operator’s.
  • Keep belongings secure and carry only what you need.
  • Carry essential medicines and water if allowed, and check accessibility before travelling with someone with limited mobility.

We do not know the 2026 crowd-control plan and are not listing emergency numbers here. Use the numbers on the official notices published closer to the date.

Best Time to Arrive and How to Plan Your Evening

There is no universal arrival time. Plan backwards from your fixed point:

  1. Boat booked: work back from the written reporting time, then add the walk and the transfer from your hotel.
  2. Watching from a ghat: aim to be in place well before the evening rituals begin, and expect to stay put.
  3. Using a vehicle: work out the last drop point from the official traffic order, then add walking time for the slowest member of your group.
  4. Staying nearby: consider walking to the ghats early in the day to learn the route.
  5. With elders or small children: choose a shorter, earlier plan and a clear exit route.

The full-moon tithi starts late on 23 November, so the Kartik dawn bath on 24 November also draws crowds at the ghats in the morning.

Dev Deepawali Photography Tips

  • Protect your phone or camera near water: use a wrist strap or lanyard and keep a dry pouch handy.
  • Use low-light or night modes, and steady the device against a rail or your body rather than leaning over an edge.
  • Don’t block steps or walkways to get a shot.
  • Respect worshippers: ask before photographing people at prayer, and follow any photography rules posted at the ghat.
  • Drones are prohibited around the festival without authorisation (as in 2024).
  • No photo is worth an unsafe position.

What Should You Carry to Dev Deepawali?

  • ☐ Charged phone and, where permitted, a power bank
  • ☐ Booking confirmations and the operator’s contact number
  • ☐ Essential medicines
  • ☐ Comfortable, closed walking footwear
  • ☐ A light jacket or shawl (evenings on the river can be cold in late November)
  • ☐ Drinking water, if allowed
  • ☐ A small bag you can keep in front of you
  • ☐ Written emergency contacts and a group meeting point

Check for bag, water or item restrictions in the official notices before you go.

Where to Stay and How Long to Plan for Varanasi

Choose where to stay by how you will move on the night, not only by price. Staying within walking distance of your planned ghat or boarding point can save a long walk through crowds, but old-city lanes are narrow and often not reachable by vehicle. Staying farther out may be easier for drivers but adds a longer final walk. Consider mobility, luggage, and whether you will be coming back late.

Plan at least two nights if you can: one for arrival and settling in, one for the festival itself. If you are adding Kashi Vishwanath, Sarnath or other sights, allow extra days and check current access and darshan arrangements before you plan them. Our Kashi Darshan tour and Varanasi travel guide help with the wider trip.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dev Deepawali Varanasi 2026

When is Dev Deepawali in Varanasi in 2026?

Tuesday, 24 November 2026, on Kartik Purnima. Re-check announcements closer to the date for timings.

Why is Dev Deepawali celebrated in Varanasi?

It is the “Diwali of the gods”, kept on Kartik Purnima. According to tradition it marks Shiva’s victory over Tripurasura, and the gods are believed to bathe in the Ganga that night. Varanasi marks it by lighting lamps along the ghats.

Where can I see Dev Deepawali in Varanasi?

From the public ghats on foot, or from a boat if you have booked one and it is permitted. Dashashwamedh, Assi and the Raj Ghat–Namo Ghat stretch are the names visitors ask about most. 2026 access is not yet announced.

Is boat booking necessary for Dev Deepawali?

No. You can watch from the ghats without a boat. A boat gives a wider view and a seat, but needs advance booking and can be affected by access rules on the day.

How can I enquire about a Dev Deepawali boat ride?

Contact an operator with your date, group size and preferred boat type, and ask for an itemised written quote. If you want our help with enquiries, WhatsApp us your details. [SACHIN TO CONFIRM: add the one-line statement chosen in the boat section here.]

How much does a Dev Deepawali boat ride cost?

It varies widely by boat type, capacity, shared or private use, duration, boarding point and demand. We do not quote a figure; get a written quote that states what is included.

Is a private boat available for Dev Deepawali?

Many operators offer private boats, but availability depends on the date and on that night’s permissions. Ask for the boat’s capacity, boarding point and cancellation terms in writing.

Can I watch Dev Deepawali from the ghats without booking a boat?

Yes, subject to access and crowd arrangements on the day. Expect to walk, wait and stand, and follow instructions from police and ghat staff.

How can I reach the ghats during Dev Deepawali?

Plan to travel to the nearest permitted point and walk the final stretch. In past years vehicles were stopped well before the main ghats. Confirm the 2026 meeting point with your driver or operator.

Are there traffic restrictions during Dev Deepawali?

In past years, yes: no-vehicle zones around Godowlia, Maidagin and the main ghats, with diversions and designated parking. No 2026 order had been published when we checked on 18 October 2026, so check the Varanasi Police Commissionerate and district administration notices.

Can I book a taxi for Dev Deepawali?

Yes. Contact Sachin Travels with your date, pickup point and group size. Availability, the final pickup point and charges are confirmed before booking.

Is an Urbania or Tempo Traveller suitable for a group?

It can be, especially for arrival and departure legs and out-of-city trips, because the group travels together. It cannot go where roads are closed, so plan a drop point and a walk. See our Tempo Traveller and Urbania pages.

What should families and senior citizens consider?

Choose a shorter plan with a clear exit route, plan the walking distance, carry medicines, and ask about seating and step access on any boat. Avoid the densest ghats if crowds or standing are a problem.

What should I confirm before paying a boat operator?

Boat type and capacity, boarding point and reporting time, what is included, life jackets for all passengers, payment and cancellation terms, and the operator’s identity and contact number, all in writing.

Where can I check official announcements before visiting?

The Varanasi Police Commissionerate and the district administration publish traffic and security notices. UP Tourism and Incredible India carry general festival information. Local news usually reports the notices in the days before.
