Varanasi Boat Ride Price 2026: Types, Timings, Booking & Travel Tips
There is no single price for a boat ride in Varanasi. What you pay depends on the type of ride (shared seat or private boat), whether the quote is per person or for the whole boat, the duration and route, the boat type and its permitted capacity, the time of day, the season, and what is included. Published prices for similar rides vary many-fold, and sources disagree on whether any official rate applies, so the safest approach is to get an itemised written quote before you pay. Also note that boat operations in Varanasi are controlled by the authorities and were restricted in 2026 after the monsoon flood: see the current conditions below.
| Question | What you need to know |
|---|---|
| Boat-ride cost | Depends on operator, boat type, group size, route, duration and inclusions. Compare like with like (per person vs per boat) |
| Shared or private | Shared is usually quoted per seat; private per boat. Privacy and flexibility differ |
| Ride timing | Set by operator and the authorities. In October 2026 motor boats were reported limited to 6 am–5 pm |
| Boarding point | Not the same for every boat. Confirm the exact ghat and meeting point in writing |
| Safety | Life jackets are mandatory; boats must not carry more than permitted capacity |
| Booking | Confirm price, inclusions, cancellation terms and the operator’s contact before paying |
Boat Rides in Varanasi Right Now (October 2026)
What was reported on 9 October 2026: after the Ganga level fell, the administration allowed large motor boats to resume from Friday 9 October. The conditions reported (KTV Varanasi, in Hindi, quoting the ACP Dashashwamedh) were: at least two swimmer boatmen on each motor boat; life jackets for all passengers; only half the boat’s rated capacity; ropes, lifebuoys and other safety equipment on board; motor boats allowed only between 6 am and 5 pm; and hand-rowed boats still suspended for the time being. The same report says the order will be reviewed if the river rises or the weather worsens.
Why this matters for your plan: rowing-boat offers, evening or after-5 pm rides and full-capacity group bookings may not match the current rules, even if a listing still advertises them. These rules can change quickly, so ask the operator whether the ride you are being offered is permitted today, and check again close to your date. Boats were also suspended earlier in the monsoon when the river approached the danger mark (the danger mark in Varanasi is 71.26 m): see reports from DD News (20 Aug 2026) and Rozana Spokesman (2 Sep 2026).
How Much Does a Boat Ride in Varanasi Cost?
The honest answer is: it depends, and the figure on a listing is not always comparable with the next one. The main things that change the price:
- Shared or private. A shared ride sells seats; a private ride is the whole boat for your group.
- Per person or per boat. One of the most common sources of confusion. A quote of “₹X” can mean either.
- Duration and route. A short hop between two ghats is not the same as a long ride past all the ghats.
- Boat type and capacity. Hand-rowed boats, motor boats and larger boats differ in comfort, speed and how many people they may carry. Under the October 2026 conditions, permitted capacity is half the rated figure, which can push up per-seat prices or the number of boats a group needs.
- Time of day. Some operators price sunrise and evening rides differently from daytime ones.
- Season and demand. Festival periods and peak weekends can change both price and availability.
- Inclusions and extras. Life jackets, a guide, waiting time, pickup, taxes, and any fee to board.
No central rate applies on the riverfront according to some independent guides, while other sites mention rate boards at some ghats. We could not verify an official tariff, so we do not present one. If someone says a price is “fixed by the union” or “government rate”, ask where it is written.
Published Prices Snapshot (Not Our Prices)
To give you a sense of the spread, here are prices that different websites were advertising when we checked on 18 October 2026. These are the operators’ own figures. We have not booked with them, we do not endorse them, and they may not reflect the October 2026 conditions above.
| Source and ride | Advertised price | Basis | Duration / capacity stated | Inclusions stated |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varanasi Guru: private hand-rowed boat | From ₹2,499 | Private boat | Not stated on the page we read | Boat fare |
| Varanasi Guru: 84-ghat ride with Ganga Aarti | ₹3,499 | Per group, private | ~3 hours, up to 8 people | Life jackets |
| Visit Kashi: private motor boat, evening Aarti | From ₹3,999 | Private boat | ~2.5 hours; motor boats up to 6, larger boats more | Private boat, life jackets |
| KashiTaxi: shared Aarti boat seat | ₹490 | Per seat | Aarti viewing; duration partly described | Life jacket |
| KashiTaxi: private family rowboat | ₹1,800–₹2,400 | Per boat | 1–6 people | Entire boat |
| GoWithGuide (independent guide, not an operator) | ₹80–150 shared morning seats; ₹400–4,000+ per hour private | Mixed | Varies | Not stated |
What this shows: a shared seat and a whole private boat can be 5 to 10 times apart in headline price, a rowing boat can be listed at a fraction of a motor boat, and the same evening ride is advertised at very different figures. Treat these as context, not a price list, and never compare a per-seat price with a per-boat one. Under the October 2026 order, hand-rowed boats and after-5 pm motor-boat rides may not be available at all.
Types of Boat Rides Available in Varanasi
These are common options. Not every type runs every day, from every ghat, or under every current rule, so confirm each one.
Shared boat rides
Suits: solo travellers, couples and small groups on a budget. Benefits: a lower cost per head. Limits: you share the boat and the timing, seating may not be allocated, and you may wait for the boat to fill. Confirm: how many seats are sold, how long the ride is and where it starts.
Private boat rides
Suits: families, groups, photographers and anyone who wants a fixed departure time. Benefits: privacy and more control over timing and route. Limits: a higher total price and permitted capacity limits. Confirm: the maximum passengers allowed on the day.
Sunrise rides
Suits: people who want the quieter morning atmosphere and softer light. Limits: early start, cold mornings in winter, weather and river conditions. Confirm the departure time and meeting point the evening before.
Sunset and evening rides
Suits: those who want to see the ghats at dusk or watch the evening Ganga Aarti from the water. Limits: crowds, limited boat access near the main aarti ghat, and, under the October 2026 order, the 5 pm cut-off for motor boats. Confirm the permitted hours.
Longer or customised rides
Some operators offer longer routes or special arrangements. Ask what the route is, where it ends and whether waiting time is included.
Shared Boat vs Private Boat in Varanasi
| Factor | Shared boat | Private boat |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing structure | Usually per seat | Usually per boat |
| Privacy | Low; you share with strangers | High; your group only |
| Flexibility | Fixed departure and route | Timing and route can often be agreed |
| Couples | Cheaper; less private | More private; higher total |
| Families with children or elders | Check seating and space | Often easier to manage |
| Larger groups | May not seat everyone together | One boat for the group, if capacity allows |
| Boarding arrangements | Operator’s fixed point | Can sometimes be agreed; confirm |
| Capacity | Confirm total and per-seat count | Confirm the maximum permitted for your boat today |
| Cancellation and waiting | Often stricter, depends on operator | Ask for terms in writing |
Sunrise, Sunset or Evening Boat Ride: Which Should You Choose?
Sunrise is generally the calmer option. The riverfront is quieter, the light is softer for photographs, and you see the city’s morning bathing and rituals. Sunset gives warm light and the ghats at dusk. Evening rides are usually built around the Ganga Aarti, which means more crowds and more boats on the water.
We can’t give you fixed sunrise, sunset or aarti times: they change through the year, and operators set departures. In winter, mornings are cold and mist can limit visibility. In the monsoon, boats can be suspended when the river is high. Always confirm the actual departure time, and ask what happens if the ride is cancelled for weather or river conditions. No operator can guarantee a clear sunrise, a particular ceremony or a specific view.
What Can You See During a Varanasi Boat Ride?
Varanasi’s ghats run along the western bank of the Ganga, and the usual boat routes pass several of them, including Assi, Tulsi, Harishchandra, Kedar, Dashashwamedh, Man Mandir, Manikarnika, Panchganga and, further north, Raj Ghat and the newer Namo Ghat. The exact route depends on the operator, the start and end point, the duration, the river level and any restrictions on the day, so don’t assume a particular ride covers every ghat.
Please be respectful. Manikarnika and Harishchandra are active cremation ghats. Avoid close-up photography of the pyres and ceremonies, keep voices low, and follow your boatman’s guidance. Many rituals along the river are acts of worship, not performances.
How to Book a Boat Ride in Varanasi
- Decide the experience (sunrise, daytime, evening) and roughly how long you want to spend.
- Confirm the number of passengers, including children, and any elders or people with mobility needs.
- Ask whether the quote is per person or per boat.
- Confirm the operator or boatman, their contact number and the exact boarding ghat.
- Check the permitted capacity for your boat today (it may be lower than the rated figure).
- Ask about safety equipment and the rules in force: life jackets for every passenger, and whether the boat type and timing are currently permitted.
- Confirm what is included, any extra charges, and how long the boat will wait.
- Read the payment and cancellation terms before paying anything.
- Get written confirmation (message or receipt) that states the price, basis, time, boarding point and number of passengers.
- Reconfirm the meeting point and departure instructions the day before, and check for any change in the river or the rules.
You can do this with a reputable local operator, a hotel or a licensed guide. Whoever you use, the written confirmation matters more than the brand name. No operator should mind clear questions, and a clear answer is a good sign.
Questions to Ask Before Paying
- ☐ What is the final total price, in rupees, for my group?
- ☐ Is that per person or per boat?
- ☐ How long is the ride, and what is the route?
- ☐ Where exactly do we report, and at what time?
- ☐ What is included (life jackets, guide, taxes, waiting time)?
- ☐ Are there any additional charges?
- ☐ What is the permitted capacity today for this boat?
- ☐ What safety equipment is on board?
- ☐ What happens if the ride is delayed or cancelled (weather, river level, orders)?
- ☐ What is the refund policy?
- ☐ Can I reach you on the day, and what is your number?
Boat Ride Safety in Varanasi
Boating on the Ganga at Varanasi is a regular activity, but it takes care. The authorities have made life jackets mandatory and have been distributing them to boatmen: the Additional District Magistrate said in May 2026 that anyone refusing a life jacket should not be allowed on the boat (ETV Bharat, 31 May 2026). A district order in 2020 also said boats must not carry more than their capacity and that the number of passengers must not exceed the number of life jackets (Hindustan Times, 12 Dec 2020). Rules change, so treat these as the principles, and follow whatever is in force on the day.
- Wear the life jacket you are given, and make sure children wear one that fits.
- Follow the boatman’s and authorities’ instructions, including any announcement by the water police or disaster-response teams.
- Don’t board an overcrowded boat, one with too few life jackets, or one you can’t identify with a contact number.
- Keep children supervised and seated, and avoid standing or leaning over the side.
- Take care when boarding and disembarking: steps can be wet and uneven, and boats move.
- Protect your phone and valuables: use a strap or dry pouch, and keep bags closed.
- Follow any restriction on river conditions, timing and boat types.
- If someone has limited mobility, ask about step access and seating before booking.
We can’t tell you any particular operator is safe or officially approved. Ask to see their safety equipment and check it is on board.
Best Ghats and Boarding Points for a Boat Ride
A viewing ghat is where you watch from the steps; a boarding point is where your boat actually picks you up. They are not always the same, and the boat that shows “Dashashwamedh” in its name may board elsewhere. In general, boats are commonly boarded at ghats such as Assi, Dashashwamedh, Rajendra Prasad, Namo and others along the river, but arrangements vary with the operator, the river level and the rules in force.
Confirm the exact boarding location in writing, and ask how long the walk from the nearest road is, because vehicles cannot reach many ghats. For general information about the ghats themselves, see our Varanasi ghats guide.
Boat Rides During Dev Deepawali
The festival period is different from an ordinary visit. Boat access, boarding points, pricing and permitted boat types are set for the night and may differ from normal days. Dev Deepawali 2026 is on Tuesday, 24 November, and no official boat-access order had been published when we checked. Confirm availability, access and boarding instructions independently, and check official notices. Our dedicated Dev Deepawali in Varanasi guide covers the festival, ghat viewing, transport and safety in detail.
Boat Ride Planning for Families, Couples and Groups
- Families with children: choose a private boat if you can, check that life jackets fit every child, and keep a hand on small children while boarding.
- Senior citizens: ask about step access and seating, avoid very early or very crowded slots, and allow time to board slowly.
- Couples: a private or small boat gives privacy; a shared seat is cheaper. Sunrise is usually quieter.
- Photographers: agree a fixed departure time and route, and protect gear near water.
- Larger groups: check the permitted capacity today, which may mean booking two boats, and agree one meeting point and one contact person.
If you need transport to reach a confirmed pickup point, a taxi or group vehicle can help, subject to access restrictions near the ghats. See our taxi service in Varanasi, Tempo Traveller hire and Varanasi airport taxi pages, or the Kashi Darshan tour to combine a boat ride with temple and ghat sightseeing.
What to Carry for a Boat Ride
- ☐ Booking confirmation and the operator’s contact number
- ☐ Phone, and a written emergency contact
- ☐ Necessary medication
- ☐ Clothing for the weather (a warm layer in winter mornings, sun cover in summer)
- ☐ A dry pouch or strap for your phone, and a small closed bag
- ☐ Water, if allowed
- ☐ Anything you need for mobility (stick, support)
Follow the operator’s instructions and any local restriction on what you can carry.
Common Boat Booking Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming the price covers everything. Ask what is included and what is not.
- Mixing up per-person and per-boat prices. Always get the total for your group.
- Going to an unconfirmed boarding point. Get the ghat and time in writing.
- Ignoring capacity and life jackets. A boat with too few life jackets should not take everyone.
- Skipping the cancellation terms. Weather and river orders can stop a ride.
- Assuming a festival booking works like a normal one. Access and boat types can change.
- Paying without a clear record of what was booked.
Frequently Asked Questions About Varanasi Boat Rides
How much does a boat ride in Varanasi cost?
It varies by boat type, shared or private use, duration, route and demand. Advertised figures we saw on 18 October 2026 ranged from a few hundred rupees for a shared seat to several thousand for a private motor boat. Get a written total for your group.
Is the price per person or per boat?
It can be either. Shared rides are usually per seat and private rides per boat, but always ask, and get the total in writing.
Is a shared boat cheaper than a private boat?
Per person, usually yes. For a group that fills a private boat, the cost per head can be comparable, and you get privacy and fixed timing.
How can I book a boat ride in Varanasi?
Use a reputable operator, a hotel or a licensed guide, share your date, group size and preferred ride, and ask for the price basis, boarding point, inclusions and cancellation terms in writing. See the booking steps above.
Where do boat rides in Varanasi start?
From several ghats along the river, such as Assi, Dashashwamedh and Namo, depending on the operator and conditions. Confirm the exact boarding point in writing.
What is the difference between a sunrise and sunset boat ride?
Sunrise is usually quieter with softer light and morning rituals; sunset and evening rides show the ghats at dusk and are often linked to the evening aarti, with more crowds. Times change through the year, so confirm departure.
How long does a boat ride last?
It depends on the route and operator. Listings we saw ranged from short rides to roughly two and a half to three hours for longer routes. Ask for the duration and what it covers.

The total price and basis (per person or per boat), duration, boarding point, inclusions, extra charges, permitted capacity, safety equipment, cancellation terms and a contact number for the day.
Are boat rides available during Dev Deepawali?
Boats are widely used on the festival night, but access, boarding points and permitted boats are set for the night and can differ from normal days. No official 2026 order had been published when we checked. See the Dev Deepawali guide.
Can boat rides be affected by weather or river conditions?
Yes. Boat operations were suspended in Varanasi in August and September 2026 when the Ganga rose towards the danger mark, and large motor boats resumed with conditions on 9 October 2026. Ask about the cancellation and refund terms before you pay.

Yes. Many visitors pair a boat ride with the evening Ganga Aarti, temple visits and Sarnath. See our Varanasi travel guide and Kashi Darshan tour, and plan the transport to your boarding point in advance.
How can I confirm current prices and availability?
Ask the operator directly for a written, itemised quote for your date and group, ask whether the boat type and timing are permitted under the current rules, and check news reports and official notices for any suspension or change.
