Varanasi Boat Ride Price & Booking Guide (2026)
There is no single price for a boat ride in Varanasi. What you pay depends on whether a quote is per person or for the whole boat, the type of boat, how long you are on the water and which stretch of the river you cover, the time of day, and the season. Operator websites publish figures for similarly named rides that differ by roughly ten times, so the safest approach is to get four things confirmed before you board: the total price, the duration and route, what is included, and where you will meet the boat.
Current river conditions (updated 12 October 2026)
The Ganga rose above the warning level in early September 2026 and the district administration suspended all boat operations. Local news reports say that from Friday 9 October 2026, large motorboats were allowed to operate again, with conditions: at least two swimmer-boatmen on each boat, life jackets for every passenger, passengers limited to half of the boat’s rated capacity, and operating hours of 6 am to 5 pm. Hand-rowed boats were reported to remain suspended for now. Officials said the arrangement can be reviewed, and motorboats stopped again, if water levels rise or the weather turns.
What this means for planning: sunrise rides that start before 6 am and evening Ganga Aarti rides that start after 5 pm may not be possible while these conditions last, and reduced capacity may change how operators quote. Ask any operator what is currently permitted for your date, and treat everything below as general guidance rather than a promise of availability.
Varanasi Boat Ride Price: What Should You Expect?
Boat rides on the Ganga are hired mostly from independent boat owners and boatmen, and prices are negotiated rather than set from one public rate card. We could not find a single official, current tariff covering all boat types, so this guide does not print one. The published figures we reviewed in October 2026 were marketing prices from individual operators and tour websites. They ranged from low three-figure amounts for a shared seat on a rowboat, to several thousand rupees for a private motorboat, to five-figure amounts for large bajra or double-decker boats. Those are operator quotations, not verified market rates, and the same label (“private boat”, “Aarti ride”) often covers very different boats and routes.
Per-person price vs per-boat price
This is the single most common source of confusion, so check it first.
- Per-person pricing means you pay for a seat on a boat shared with other travellers, usually strangers. The ride runs when enough seats are sold or at a set time.
- Per-boat pricing means you pay one amount for the whole boat, and it carries only your group. The cost is the same whether you fill the boat or not.
To compare the two fairly, divide a per-boat quote by the number of people who will actually ride. Illustration of the arithmetic only, not a price: a whole-boat quote of ₹3,000 shared by 6 people is ₹500 per person, which you can then compare with a per-seat quote for the same duration and route.
Shared, private and event-day pricing are different things
Everyday rides, event-day packages (such as Dev Deepawali) and premium boats are priced on different logic. An event-day package price is not a guide to an ordinary morning ride, and an ordinary rate should not be assumed to hold on a festival night. Whenever you see a price, ask whether it is an everyday rate, an event package, or a one-off offer, and what date it applies to.
| Format | Usually priced | Suits | Confirm before paying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared seat on a motorboat or large boat | Per person | Solo travellers, couples on a budget | Seat guarantee, departure time, how many other passengers |
| Private hand-rowed boat | Per boat (often by the hour) | Small groups who want a quiet pace | Duration, route, whether rowing is currently permitted |
| Private motorboat | Per boat | Families and groups who want a longer route | Capacity, duration, which ghats are covered |
| Large bajra or double-decker boat | Per boat or per person, depending on operator | Large groups, special occasions | What the price includes, seating, booking and cancellation terms |
Types of Boat Rides Available in Varanasi
Not every type is available every day. River conditions, local orders and demand decide what actually runs.
Shared boat rides
You join other passengers and split the boat. They are usually the lowest cost per person, but you have less say over the route, the pace and the departure time. They suit travellers who want the experience without organising a group.
Private boat rides
The boat and crew are hired by your group alone. You can usually agree the duration and the stretch of river with the boatman, which suits families, older travellers and anyone who wants to take photographs without rushing. The trade-off is a higher total price, even though the cost per person can be competitive for a full boat.
Sunrise boat rides
Rides around first light, when the ghats are in use for bathing, prayer and daily routines. See the comparison below for how this differs from an evening ride.
Evening boat rides
Rides timed around the Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat, where boats gather on the water for a view of the ceremony from the river. These are the most crowded rides on the river.
Special-event boat viewing
On big festival nights, most notably Dev Deepawali, boats are booked well ahead, boarding arrangements can change, and operators sell fixed event packages. These are covered separately below and in our Dev Deepawali travel guide.
What Affects Boat Ride Prices in Varanasi?
Boat type and capacity
Boats on the river range from small hand-rowed boats to motorboats to larger bajra and double-decker boats. Bigger and better-equipped boats cost more to run. Capacity also matters for safety: the district administration has previously ordered that boats must not carry more passengers than their capacity, and the current conditions above limit motorboats to half of rated capacity for now.
Duration and route
A short hop between two ghats, a one-hour ride and a full stretch of the riverfront are not the same product. Ask which ghat the ride starts at, where it turns around, and whether the time quoted includes waiting for the Aarti.
Number of passengers
For a private boat the total is usually fixed per boat, so each extra person lowers the cost per head, up to the boat’s safe capacity. Some operators add a charge for extra passengers beyond a base number. Ask.
Time of day and seasonal demand
Evening slots before the Aarti and the cooler months of October to March draw the most demand. High water in the monsoon can mean fewer boats and, for hand-rowed boats, more boatmen needed to handle the current, which some operators say raises prices.
Special-event demand
Festival nights are priced as event packages, and operator quotes for those nights are not comparable with ordinary days.
Operator, inclusions and booking terms
Life jackets are mandatory, so they should not be an extra. Other things vary: a guide or commentary, refreshments, pick-up from your hotel, and cancellation or rescheduling terms if the river is closed. Two quotes with the same number can be very different offers.
Sunrise vs Evening Boat Ride in Varanasi
Neither is simply “better”. They are different experiences, and the right choice depends on what you want from the river.
| Sunrise | Evening (around the Aarti) | |
|---|---|---|
| Atmosphere | Quieter; bathing, prayer and daily riverfront life | Busy and ceremonial; many boats gathered on the water |
| Photography | Soft early light on the ghat buildings | Low, fire-based light; harder to photograph well |
| Crowds | Generally lighter on the water | Heaviest of the day; boats position early |
| Planning | Early start; a good fit with an Assi Ghat morning | Board well before the Aarti begins |
| Under the current conditions | Motorboats may only run from 6 am | Motorboats may stop at 5 pm, before the Aarti |
Aarti timing follows sunset. In winter it typically begins around 5:45–6:30 pm, so confirm the time locally rather than relying on a fixed clock time. You can also watch the Aarti for free from the steps at Dashashwamedh Ghat; a boat is an alternative vantage point, not a requirement.
Where Do Varanasi Boat Rides Usually Start?
Rides are commonly arranged from Dashashwamedh Ghat and Assi Ghat, and from other ghats along the river. Boarding points are not guaranteed: they depend on the operator, water level, crowd management and any event-day arrangements, and an operator may ask you to meet at a different ghat from the one you expect.
Two practical points. First, most ghats and the lanes leading to them cannot be reached by car, so you will usually be dropped at a point on the edge of the old city and walk the rest. Our Varanasi ghats guide explains the layout, and our Varanasi travel guide covers how to get around. Second, ask your boatman or operator for a pin or landmark for the exact boarding spot, and allow extra time for the walk.
What Can You See During a Ganga Boat Ride?
The main appeal is the long sweep of the riverfront seen from the water. Depending on route and time, that can include Assi Ghat at the southern end, Tulsi Ghat, the Scindia Ghat temple that leans into the river, the Man Mandir Ghat observatory building, Dashashwamedh Ghat and, further north, Manikarnika Ghat.
Manikarnika and Harishchandra are active cremation grounds. Viewing from the river is a respectful distance, but photographing cremations is not appropriate. Which ghats you pass, and how close the boat goes, depends on the route agreed, the water level, and crowd conditions at the time.
How to Book a Boat Ride in Varanasi
You can arrange a boat directly with a boatman at a ghat, through your hotel, or through a tour operator or booking website. Advance booking gives you more certainty on busy dates, while ghat-side hiring gives more flexibility but needs more care with the price.
Decide between a shared and private ride
If you are a small group who wants control of timing and pace, a private boat is easier to plan around. If you are travelling solo or on a budget, a shared seat may do.
Confirm the total price
Ask for one total amount and ask whether it is per person or for the whole boat. For a group, ask for the whole-boat price in writing, and for a shared seat ask whether the seat is guaranteed.
Confirm the duration and route
Ask the starting ghat, the turn-around point and the time on the water. If you want the Aarti, ask whether the boat will be in position before it begins and how long it will stay.
Ask about inclusions and additional charges
Ask whether life jackets, a guide, hotel pick-up and refreshments are included, and whether there are extra charges for additional passengers, waiting or a longer route.
Confirm the meeting point and cancellation terms
Ask for the exact boarding spot, what happens if the river is closed or conditions change, and whether you get a refund or a new slot. Boating has been suspended at short notice during high water in 2026, so this matters.
Save the operator’s contact and booking details
Keep the boatman’s or operator’s name and phone number, the agreed price and the time in a message you can show later, and keep any payment receipt.

Boat Ride Safety and Practical Travel Tips
- Wear a life jacket. Varanasi’s administration has made life jackets mandatory on boats, and an additional district magistrate said anyone refusing one should not be let on board. Do not board without one.
- Respect capacity. A district order reported in 2020 said boats must not exceed their capacity and that passengers are limited to the number of life jackets available. Current conditions limit motorboats to half of capacity.
- Check the river, not just the booking. Boat operations are suspended when the water level rises. The danger level at Varanasi is 71.26 metres, and operations were suspended in 2026 when the river crossed the lower warning level.
- Children and older travellers. Ask about boarding assistance, because ghat steps are uneven and boats rock when people step on. Choose a time of day that avoids the heat and the crowd.
- Follow the boatman’s instructions on seating, standing and moving around, especially in a crowd of boats near the Aarti.
- Pay safely. Agree the price before boarding, ask how payment is taken, and keep proof of any advance payment.
Planning a Boat Ride During Dev Deepawali
Dev Deepawali falls on Kartik Purnima. Most listings, including reference sources, give the 2026 date as 24 November 2026, though you should confirm it against the official arrangements closer to the time. It is the busiest night on the river: boats are booked ahead, quotes are for event packages rather than everyday rides, and boarding points and traffic arrangements can change from the usual ones.
If you want a boat that night, plan early, ask what the package includes and for which date and time it is valid, and expect different terms from an ordinary day. Our Dev Deepawali guide covers the festival and transport planning in more detail.
Planning Your Boat Ride With a Varanasi Sightseeing Trip
A boat ride works best as one anchored part of a day rather than something squeezed between stops. Many visitors pair a sunrise ride with a relaxed Assi Ghat morning, or an evening ride with the Ganga Aarti, and keep the middle of the day for the temple and rest. Keep in mind that old-city lanes are walking-only, so a ghat-side drop and pick-up point needs planning.

Frequently Asked Questions About Varanasi Boat Ride Prices
What is the price of a boat ride in Varanasi?
It depends on the boat type, duration, route, number of passengers and season, and on whether the quote is per person or per boat. We could not verify one official tariff, and operator-published prices vary widely, so ask for a total price for your date, route and group before you agree.
Is a private boat more expensive than a shared boat?
The total is higher because you hire the whole boat. The cost per person can be closer to a shared seat if you fill the boat, so compare per-person amounts for the same duration and route.
How long does a typical boat ride take?
Ride lengths vary from a short ride between ghats to a longer ride covering much of the riverfront, so there is no standard. Confirm the time on the water and the route when you book.
Is sunrise or evening better for a boat ride?
Sunrise is quieter and better for soft-light photography, while the evening ride is built around viewing the Ganga Aarti from the water and is more crowded. Under the conditions reported on 9 October 2026, motorboats may only run between 6 am and 5 pm, so check what is allowed on your date.
Where should I go to board a boat?
Dashashwamedh Ghat and Assi Ghat are common starting areas, but the exact spot depends on the operator and conditions. Ask for the exact boarding point and plan for a walk from where a vehicle can drop you.
Can I book a boat ride in advance?
Yes, advance bookings through operators, hotels or tour companies are common, and are sensible for festival dates. You can also hire a boat at the ghat, with more room to negotiate but less certainty.
Can families and senior citizens take a boat ride?
Many do. Ask about boarding assistance, avoid the crowded and hot parts of the day, and make sure everyone wears a life jacket. Anyone with mobility or medical concerns should check with their doctor.
Are boat rides available during Dev Deepawali?
Boats are widely offered on the night, usually as event packages that need advance booking. Availability and boarding points depend on that year’s arrangements, which should be confirmed with the operator.
What should I confirm before paying?
The total price and whether it is per person or per boat, the route and duration, what is included, the exact meeting point, and what happens if the river is closed.
Can boat rides be cancelled because of weather or river conditions?
Yes. The administration suspends boat operations when the river is high, as it did in August and September 2026. Ask the operator in advance what refund or alternative slot applies.
